Commissioned by Heavyweight Digital Type Foundry, this campaign was conceived to introduce Pacific: a new typeface inspired by the ancient tradition of hand-painted boat lettering. This collection of 35mm film photos explores how typography can inhabit the physical world, far away from screens and vectors.

Pacific was designed as a natural counterpart to Atlantic typeface, expanding the typographic family with a distinct voice rooted in nautical heritage. To bring Jan Horčík’s vision to life, two handcrafted model boats served as our canvas.

Each letter was first stamped on the boats and carefully hand-painted using a fine brush and acrylic white ink. The process resulted in a romantic tribute to the artisans who once lettered full-scale ships entirely by hand.

To echo the authenticity of the craft, the entire campaign was photographed on 35mm film. This analog technique allowed us to capture the warmth, spontaneity and subtle imperfection that digital methods often smooth over.

Close-up shots demanded inventive contraptions and repeated magnifications to faithfully convey the intricacy of each letterform. Some of the photos required up to six magnification rings to achieve an organic zoom of 40×.

At its heart, this project is a celebration of storytelling, slowness and the tangible aspect of typography. It moves beyond the pixel, where the letters are not just seen but felt. It’s a tactile encounter with type in a ready-made world that increasingly forgets to observe and touch.
